Pietro Mennea

Pietro Paolo Mennea (Barletta, June 28, 1952 – Rome, 21 March 2013) was an Athlete and Italian politician.

Olympic champion of the 200-meter dash in Moscow in 1980 and world record holder of the specialty from 1979 to 1996 with a time of 19 “72 which remains the current European record.

Also known as “Freccia del Sud”, he is the only 200-meter Athlete in history that has qualified for four consecutive Olympic finals.

1972: 200 m (3rd) – 4×100 m (8th)

1976: 200 m (4th);

1980: 100 m (el. 4th of fin.) – 200 m (1st) – 4×400 (3rd);

1984: 200 m (7th) – 4×100 m (4th) – 4×400 m (5th);

1988: (4th package of fin.).

Also 4 participations at the Mediterranean Games and 3 at the Universiade.

He has over 528 races (419 individual and 109 relay) and 52 appearances for the national team.
